Samuel H. Boardman Natural Bridges Viewpoint

If time restrictions permitted only a single stop along the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor, my choice would be Natural Bridges Viewpoint. A forest walk amongst ferns and other lush undergrowth reaches a deck with exceptional views of the unique rock formations which give this area its name. Unlike other coastal arches, these stone bridges form a chain, branching off main coastline and encircling their own private cove. The surf pouring, splashing, and dancing amongst these rocks and against the surrounding cliffs provides a spectacular show.

The path to the Natural Bridges Viewpoint is also a tiny segment of the Oregon Coast Trail. So you can experience a piece of the nearly 400-mile hiking route as you head through the trees. Your destination is a deck mounted on the side of the cliff, where you can witness the sea’s artwork and perpetual sculpting.

The trail continues after descending stairs leave the deck, but my scouting ended at the deck.

Terrain: Tree debris over asphalt, which is broken in places. Path is one person wide, slight decline to deck. Deck is level, but slick, especially for a cane (but handrails can be used).

Directions: North of Brookings on Highway 101, Natural Bridges Viewpoint is about a mile from the north end of Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. Parking is in a turnout next to the road, marked with a State Park sign. The trail starts on from the south end of the parking area.
